AGRICULTURE/FARMING
AGRICULTURE
The
village's inhabitants were occupied with agriculture
since the old days. Some had their own fields, which
they tilled. However, most of the village's inhabitants
were landless and were compelled to obtain fields from
those that had ones through a partnership regime so
as to cultivate. The owner granted the -cultivated -field,
the water, half the chemicals and half of the fertilisers.
The worker provided his labour and half of the expenses.
The two shared the revenue equally. The same partnership
method still occurs today.
The village's most important
products are the artichokes
and - excellent quality -watermelons.
Through this the village became known throughout Cyprus
and also in neighbouring countries, carrying out exports
of the above produce since the old days. Potatoes,
okras, and other garden-produce are also cultivated
in the community's region. During recent years, the
cultivation of agricultural produce in greenhouses has
developed. In the community's cultivable stretches,
irrigation was done through the wells until the water-dam
was created in 1963, as a large percentage was irrigated
by it. Today, Kiti is included in a land re-allotment
region and is irrigated by the South Conveyor.
10% of the community's inhabitants
are occupied with agriculture.
FARMING
There is a large aviary
in Kiti today, branched out throughout Cyprus. This
unit also imports fish from abroad, which it distributes
in the market of Cyprus.
There are about 15 stockbreeding
units that deal with the raising of goats/sheep, cows,
and horses.
The Community Council has plans for
the creation of a stockbreeding zone in the west of
the community, where all the stockbreeding units will
be transferred.
The inhabitants occupied with
stockbreeding add up to about 3% of the community's
population.
