  HISTORY

The cultural inheritance, and the manners and customs of a place are -inevitably -neglected and let to be worn by time, forgotten and destroyed in a world changing at a tremendous rate.

In such an era, a group of romantic people in Kiti gave its own answer. Knowing that tradition is what bonds us to our land, to the place where our grandfathers and ourselves were born and raised, and which we aspire to render to our children, they formed the Archangelos Cultural Society (Archangel) in 1994. The basic goal of the Society is the preservation of this tradition.

The cultural centre is housed in a traditional building made of sun-dried bricks, which has a history bound to the community and was kindly granted by the "Panagia Aggeloktisti" Church Committee.

This building housed the Gendarmerie until the 1940's. Today, the detention rooms and the horse-stables have been converted -with a lot of love and artistry -to a library, also operating as a lending library, and a showroom for cultural inheritance items.

The building's forecourt has been suitably formulated so that it can host various cultural activities of the village such as the standard Easter celebrations with traditional games, and the annual awarding of distinguished pupils, higher level students, and athletes of the community.

Every year a ceremony is held in honour of life’s pioneers. Special attention is also paid to the next generations. Theatrical plays for children by theatrical companies of Cyprus and a Christmas celebration are held. Lectures are often given upon issues that concern the youth.

This effort cannot succeed without the moral and material aid of the Community Council and the Co-operative Credit Society of Kiti that assists in every event, as well as the aid of the "Athena" program of the Ministry of Education and Culture's Cultural Services.
