  PANAGIA ANGELOCTISTIS

In Kiti there's the ancient church of "Panagia Aggeloktisti" (meaning "Virgin Mary, built by Angels").

There are two versions regarding the name of the church. The first reports that when it was decided to build the church, the decision was not for the location where it stands today but for some other place. However, having begun setting the foundations in that place they observed that -as if through a miracle -the foundations had been transferred to the area where the church is today. So, they continued building in the new venue since it was -by now -obvious that this was God's will. However, another odd event occurred. As the construction continued the builders discovered every morning that the building of the construction advanced by itself. So, they watched during the night and saw that around midnight angels would come down from the heavens and -chanting hymns for the Virgin Mary -were building the church during the night.
The other version says that because of the Virgin Mary's mosaic that is found in the church. Anyone noticing it and sees how beautiful it is says that human hands could not have made such a mosaic. So, it is believed that this -also -was made with the aid of angels.

The "Aggeloktisti" church is of the transept order with a dome and was built around the 11th century. The apse of the church, which is considered to be older, is a remain from a 5th century Basilica while the west part is a more recent expansion.
The date 1714 is upon the chief entrance of the central temple, obviously not referring to the construction date but to the date of some repair done to it. A sign -also at the temple's chief entrance -mentions the Bishop of Kiti, Sylvester, who had made the renovation of the church. Another date upon the icon screen (1855) displays the screen's date of construction. Icons of the 19th century as well as some older ones are on this icon screen.
A small arch-covered chapel was added to the north side of the church during the 12th century, dedicated to the "Anargyri" Saints, Cosmas and Damianos. Two layers of frescoes are extant in the chapel. The latest layer, dating back to the 15th century, depicts St. George riding a horse and the other saints standing, while the oldest cannot be dated without the latest layer being removed.

The Latin chapel in the south side of the church was added in the 14th century and impresses with its gothic style. This is where the Latin clerics performed their ceremonies of worship during the era of the Latin Domination. A tombstone in the corner of the room verifies that the church's yard was formerly used as a graveyard. The image of a woman is engraved upon a gravestone placed in the western wall, an inscription around it mentioning that the deceased was Simone, daughter of Sir Quillaume Gwers and wife of Sir Renee de Gipelle, who died on the 5th of November, 1302.

The main temple of "Panagia Aggeloktisti" has three aisles and is built upon the foundations of an older, Byzantine Basilica. In the main church there are some icons of masterly art. One of these is the icon of Archangel Michael that is found on the screen by the temple's entrance and dates back to the 15th century. This Byzantine icon of Archangel Michael is one of the most rare icons of all Orthodoxy and is recognised as the first in its kind by UNESCO. The portable -masterpiece -icon of St. John the Theologian that is preserved in the chancel of the temple is of an unknown era and maker.

That which undoubtedly attracts interest and attention is the -unique in its kind -mosaic that is found on the apse of the chancel, depicting a unique model of the Virgin Mary standing up rather than sitting. The Virgin Mary is standing upon a decorated footstool, holding Christ in her left arm while her right extends toward Christ's knee, in a formula forerunning the "Panagia Odegetria" ("Virgin Mary who guides"). The Archangels Michael and Gabriel are depicted on her right and on her left. The two Archangels hold two glass spheres in their hands, which they offer to the Virgin Mary. Gabriel bears two letters upon his garment, "H" and "Γ". Although some traces of letters can be seen, because the body of Archangel Michael is destroyed, they cannot be distinguished. A decorative frame surrounds the entire composition with the dominating subject being the source of life inside a voluminous acanthus bud and birds, ducks, parrots, and deer. The inscription +Η ΑΓΙΑ+ΜΑΡΙΑ+ (Holy Maria) is found above the Virgin Mary. The mosaic, having been dated in several eras from the 4th century to the 14th, is considered one of the rarest of its kind in the world that is still extant today, similar to that in Ravenna of Italy.
Thousands of pilgrims, both local and foreign, visit the Church of "Panagia Aggeloktisti" every year so as to witness from up close its beauty, its frescoes, and its renowned mosaic. The finding can be only one after seeing it: No human hand could possibly create such mastery, such harmony, and such beauty. Even the serenity in the church's precinct witnesses the presence of Angels.
